Ministry, SQU Host Discussion on Future of Arab Music in Oman

Muscat:  The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in cooperation with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), organised a specialised panel discussion titled “Reviving Arab Music: The Role of the Arab Music Academy” at the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The session brought together a number of academics, experts and practitioners in the field of music to discuss the current state and future of Arab music.

The event forms part of ongoing efforts to support the arts as a key component of national identity and to enhance cultural awareness through dialogue and knowledge exchange.

Participants discussed several key issues affecting Arab music, including challenges related to documentation, the declining presence of classical forms and the growing influence of contemporary musical styles.

They also highlighted the importance of balancing authenticity with renewal, stressing the need to adopt approaches that support the revival of Arab music through innovation and sustainable development.

The discussion further addressed the impact of globalisation and modern technologies on musical production and audience preferences, as well as the need to adapt to changing cultural dynamics.
