124% Rise in Confirmed Pregnancies at Al Wattayah Complex

Operational Growth Boosts IVF Success Rates in Oman

Muscat: The Fertility Center at Al Wattayah Gynecology and Obstetrics Complex, affiliated with the Directorate General of Khoula Hospital, has recorded 272 pregnancies resulting in 99 births — including twin cases — since its opening in 2024. Additionally, 143 families are currently awaiting the birth of their first child this year.

Dr. Naema Obaid Al Maamari, Senior Consultant in IVF and ICSI and Head of the Fertility Center, told Oman News Agency that confirmed pregnancies increased from 84 cases in 2024 to 188 cases in 2025. This brings the total over the two years to 272 pregnancies — an estimated rise of 124 percent — reflecting continuous improvements in laboratory performance, clinical services and treatment effectiveness.

During its first two years of operation (2024–2025), the center witnessed significant growth in workload and marked progress in performance indicators, positively impacting pregnancy rates and treatment success.

The total number of Oocyte Pick-Up (OPU) cycles reached 1,482, including 611 cycles in 2024 and 871 cycles in 2025 — an increase of 42.6 percent. Meanwhile, Embryo Transfers (ET) totalled 837 procedures, rising from 305 in 2024 to 532 in 2025, indicating enhanced operational capacity and improved workflow efficiency.

Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET) recorded a notable increase, climbing from 184 procedures in 2024 to 430 in 2025. This growth is attributed to the development of advanced freezing protocols, improved embryo quality and more effective cycle management.

A total of 1,674 embryos were transferred during the two-year period, including 409 fresh embryos and 1,265 frozen embryos, averaging approximately two embryos per transfer. This approach aligns with approved clinical standards aimed at balancing higher success rates with reduced risks of multiple pregnancies.

FET procedures alone resulted in 184 confirmed pregnancies in 2025, underscoring the effectiveness of cryopreservation techniques and careful case-based timing of embryo transfers.

Dr. Al Maamari attributed the improved outcomes to expanded use of frozen embryo protocols, the growing expertise of the medical team after its first operational year and increased case volumes. These factors strengthened coordination between clinical and laboratory teams and enhanced overall treatment outcomes.

She noted that the achievements of the past two years provide a solid foundation for the next phase, with plans to further expand the center’s capacity and broaden its assisted reproduction services to meet rising demand while continuing to elevate healthcare quality standards.
