1781 artisanal fishermen in Seeb

Al Seeb: The craft of fishing in the Wilayat of Seeb in the Governorate of Muscat has been of great importance to the residents of the state for hundreds of years.

Yousef bin Hamad Al-Nahdi, Director of the Fisheries Department in Al-Seeb, says, “There are about (1,781) fishermen in the state of Al-Seeb who practice the fishing craft on board (800) fishing boats, and their monthly production of fish reaches 8 and a half tons per month.

He added, “With the requirements of developing the fisheries sectors in the state and in cooperation with the relevant authorities to develop the work system in this field, in the coming months of this year 2023, everything related to fish sector procedures transactions will be transformed into a modern and advanced electronic system.”

The director of the Department of Fisheries in Seeb explained that among the types of fish that are found in the wilayat are those found on the seabed at a depth of 40 to 50 meters, the most important of which are grouper, antelope and squid, and some of them are found on the surface of the sea, the most important of which are jayther, kingfish, sahwa, crickets, molasses, shark, sardines, And dolphins, and every type of fish has windows and special equipment for hunting it.

For his part, Yusef bin Khalfan Al Mahrami, a fisherman in the Wilayat of Seeb, said that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is working to provide all services and facilities to fishermen, as it has established a special port for sea fishing in the state, in addition to distributing large refrigerators that are placed in the boat during the fishing trip, in which various fish are placed. They are caught to save them from damage, and fishermen are also provided with modern boxes to transport the fish from the boat to the auction hall (calling the market) and other services that facilitate the fishermen’s work and the practice of the fishing profession.
