27,000 Kilometres Added to Oman’s Google Street View Coverage

Google Street View Adds New Routes and Landmarks in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in cooperation with the National Survey and Geospatial Information Authority (NSGIA) and Google, has launched the second phase of the “Street View” project, enabling users inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman to explore natural landscapes, historical landmarks, and modern infrastructure through 360-degree panoramic images on Google Maps.

The second phase was introduced through an official update on the Google Maps application, contributing to strengthening Oman’s digital presence and improving access to geographic locations. The project is expected to support several sectors, particularly tourism, as well as service and business development.

This phase expanded coverage to additional governorates across the Sultanate of Oman, including routes and sites not included in the first phase. The expansion forms part of plans to broaden imaging coverage during 2025, with a targeted distance of 27,000 kilometres, using Google’s specialized Trekker imaging devices.

The launch reflects the Sultanate of Oman’s commitment to supporting innovation, enhancing digital accessibility, and highlighting its cultural, historical, and natural diversity. Users can access the images through the Google Maps application by activating the Street View option within display settings.

It is worth noting that the first phase of the project covered a selected group of sites, including Khor Rori, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with a coverage distance of approximately 36,000 kilometres. With the completion of the second phase, the total coverage now reaches around 63,000 kilometres.

The project is scheduled to continue with a third phase in 2026, which will focus on updating and reviewing previously covered routes to ensure current and accurate visual representation of the Sultanate of Oman’s diverse terrain and landmarks.
