Muscat: Engineer Ahmed Al-Abri, Director of the Department of Agricultural Development in Al-Dhahirah, said that the wheat crop was recently planted in the Saih Al-Salam area in the state of Dhank in Al-Dhahirah Governorate, with an area of 80 acres in agricultural lands invested in the usufruct system by investors benefiting from those lands, as this comes within the framework of the efforts of the General Directorate of Wealth. Agricultural and water resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate support farmers and encourage them to grow wheat to achieve food security and strengthen the agricultural economy.
He added: The farmers benefiting from land under the usufruct system in the Saih Al Salam area, on an area of 500 acres, have begun a first experiment by planting 80 acres of wheat of the variety (Wadi Qurayyat 226) for the agricultural season 2023-2024 using the center pivot irrigation system for the first time in Al Dhahirah Governorate, and the expansion will be gradual. Cultivation of wheat in the coming seasons to cover all the area granted to investors.
He added that wheat cultivation began in the middle of last November and it is expected that production quantities from this cultivated area (80 acres) will reach about 100 tons in the harvest season in March of next year, which will contribute to increasing wheat productivity in Al Dhahirah Governorate this year. season.
Al-Abri explained: Encouraging wheat cultivation is one of the main goals of the directorate, and it has undertaken many efforts to promote wheat cultivation in the states of the governorate (Ibri, Yanqul and Dank), including providing technical information to the farmer and educating him through seminars and training workshops, and providing some types of support such as high-quality seeds and harvesting machines. And work on marketing and purchasing the product in cooperation with the Oman Flour Mills Company.
It is worth noting that Al Dhahirah Governorate’s wheat production during the last agricultural season 2022-2023 was about 250 tons, with a total cultivated area of 245 acres, and the number of farmers reached 474 farmers.
