Al Aqr Wall and Square Opens in Nizwa

Nizwa: The Al-Aqr Wall and Square, which is a prominent archaeological landmark in the state, was opened this evening in the village of Al-Aqr in the state of Nizwa in Al-Dakhiliyah Governorate.  It is about 1,950 meters long, and about 400 square meters of it have been restored.

Ishaq bin Hilal Al-Sheriani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nizwa International Investment Company, said: Reviving ancient houses that were abandoned decades ago has today become a destination on the local, global and international maps and the first favorite destination in domestic tourism.

He added: The heritage village contained 18 rooms 7 years ago, while today it includes 200 rooms – and the number is increasing – with many quality facilities.

There are more than 15 cafes, two museums, a public library, and two majlis, in addition to a center for introducing Islam, a Qur’an school, and a popular clinic – considering that the first hospital in Nizwa was in Al-Aqr neighborhood.

He explained that these projects contributed to providing hundreds of jobs for young people, both college and part-time, and nationalized funds, consolidated the culture of self-employment, and inspired many young people.

Suleiman bin Muhammad Al-Sulaimani, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nizwa International Investment Company, said: The length of the wall reached about 1,950 meters, of which about 400 square meters were restored, noting that the wall includes several towers, the highest height of which is 13 meters and the highest height in the mornings is 10. meters, while the highest height of the wall is about 9 metres, and the lowest is 4 and a half metres.

Al-Sulaimani added: What was opened today is an estimated 400 square metres, including a gate and 6 towers, at a cost estimated at approximately RO 400,000 .

The opening ceremony was sponsored by His Excellency Engineer Ibrahim bin Saeed Al Kharousi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Heritage.
