Houston: Astronauts aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission have begun their return journey to Earth following a historic crewed flight around the Moon.
The four-member crew is travelling aboard the Orion spacecraft, with splashdown expected in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California.
The final phase of the 10-day mission includes separation of the crew capsule from the service module, followed by re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere and a brief communications blackout before parachuting into the ocean.
The crew consists of US astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
The mission, launched from Cape Canaveral on 1 April using NASA’s Space Launch System, carried astronauts beyond the far side of the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years.
During re-entry, the spacecraft is expected to reach speeds exceeding 40,000 km/h, with external temperatures rising to around 2,760°C, testing the performance of its heat shield.
NASA has adjusted the re-entry trajectory to reduce heat buildup following observations from earlier test flights.
The mission also set a new distance record, with the crew travelling about 252,756 miles from Earth, surpassing the Apollo 13 record set in 1970.
