CEDAW Committee Examines Women’s Rights Protection Measures in Oman

Muscat:  The committee tasked with following up the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) held its first meeting for 2026 today.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development and Chairperson of the Committee.

The meeting reviewed national initiatives and programmes related to women’s welfare, as well as efforts undertaken in preparing the Sultanate of Oman’s response to observations concerning the fourth national report submitted under the Convention.

The committee also discussed the National Plan for Omani Women, the cooperation programme with the United Nations Population Fund and the “Encyclopedia of Omani Women” project.

The meeting examined ways to develop the Law of Oman Human Rights Commission to strengthen mechanisms for protecting women’s rights and safeguarding legal protections against discrimination.

The committee also reviewed measures related to alignment with the Paris Principles to ensure women’s representation within the organizational structures of national institutions.

The meeting discussed the National Digital Empowerment Initiative “Makeen” aimed at enhancing the participation of women in digital fields.

In addition, the meeting included a presentation on the experience of the Women’s Empowerment Team at the Central Bank of Oman, highlighting the contribution of Omani women across administrative, technical and specialized sectors.
