Muscat: The Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has issued a one Omani rial polymer commemorative banknote, which will enter circulation starting 11 January 2026.
The issuance of the commemorative banknote reflects the Central Bank of Oman’s commitment to modernizing the national currency in line with international best practices, while preserving the Sultanate of Oman’s cultural and historical identity. The polymer note is distinguished by its advanced security features, durability, and environmental sustainability compared to traditional paper banknotes.
The new commemorative banknote retains its full legal tender status and can be used alongside existing banknotes without any restrictions. It is designed to commemorate a national milestone and highlight key elements of Omani heritage, while incorporating state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting technologies to enhance security and public confidence in the national currency.
The Central Bank of Oman affirmed that the introduction of polymer banknotes contributes to reducing replacement costs due to their longer lifespan, improving cash-handling efficiency, and supporting sustainability objectives within the financial sector.
The CBO urged the public to familiarize themselves with the features of the new banknote and confirmed that further details regarding its design and security features will be announced through official channels.
