Countries Pledge to Raise $12 Billion To Help Coral Reefs

California: Several countries in an international alliance have pledged $12 billion to protect coral reefs from pollution and overfishing.

The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) will use this funding to conserve and restore coral ecosystems that support a quarter of marine species and over a billion people.

However, experts warn that broader climate risks, like rising sea temperatures causing coral bleaching, must also be addressed.

ICRI aims to secure the future of vast coral reef areas and double protected regions by 2030 while accelerating restoration efforts.

Some experts emphasize the need to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions to combat the core causes of reef degradation.
