Oman to Release Documentary on American Doctor Wells Thoms

Muscat:  The Ministry of Information is preparing to launch the documentary film “Dukhtar Toms”, which documents the life and humanitarian journey of the American physician Dr. Wells Thoms, one of the prominent figures associated with the history of health services in the Sultanate of Oman.

The documentary combines historical narration, dramatized reenactments, rare archival materials and live filming in the Sultanate of Oman and the United States within a contemporary cinematic production.

The film highlights key stages of Dr. Wells Thoms’ life, who was widely known in Oman as “Dukhtar Toms”, beginning with his childhood and his early exposure to the suffering of patients with leprosy and infectious diseases in Oman, leading to his dedication to medical and humanitarian work in the Sultanate of Oman.

The documentary also reviews major milestones in his career, including the development of Al Rahma Hospital, the launch of specialized initiatives for treating infectious diseases and leprosy, his medical visits across various wilayats, and his close relationship with Omani society.

The production is based on interviews and testimonies from researchers, academics and individuals associated with healthcare services in Oman, in addition to interviews with members of Dr. Wells Thoms’ family and academics in the United States.

Filming took place in Florida, Kansas and Michigan, documenting aspects of his academic and family life, while colour grading and sound mixing were completed at specialised studios in London.

The documentary aims to highlight the legacy of a figure who left a significant impact on Oman’s medical and humanitarian history, while documenting an important chapter in the development of the healthcare sector in the Sultanate of Oman.
