Washington: A scientific assessment by over 200 scientists warns that climate change has brought the world dangerously close to breaching critical planetary “tipping points,” leading to irreversible effects on essential natural systems.
The report, led by climate scientist Tim Lenton, a climate scientist at the University of Exeter, the United Kingdom, stresses the urgency of confronting these dangers and intensifying efforts to prevent them.
Released at COP28 in Dubai, the report identifies 26 potential climate tipping points, with immediate threats to coral reefs, northern forests, and ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica.
The report suggests that focusing on tipping points could drive more urgent short-term action, while also highlighting positive tipping points in social, political, and economic systems that could lead to beneficial climate outcomes.
