Empty Quarter Festival kicks off in Thumrait

Thumrait: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) is organising the second edition of the Empty Quarter Festival in the wilayat of Thumrait, Dhofar kicks off today January 25 and will continue until February 3.

The opening ceremony will be held in the Al Khadf area of Al Shasr in Thumrait under the auspices of H E Azzan bin Qassim al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Tourism in MHT at 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

Commenting on the festival, H E Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, tweeted, “Such festivals aim to leverage the advantages of each governorate and provide spaces for entertainment, employment, craft industries and adventures.”

He also pointed out that it is imperative to provide and improve basic services in each governorate to achieve the tourism targets.

The festival also includes the holding of many different competitions, including the sand challenge competitions for four-wheel drive vehicles, the Empty Quarter desert race for running, the sand cycling competition, in addition to the festival’s open shooting competition, and the organization of the desert tourist convoy “Explore the Empty Quarter” to Ramlet Jadila in the Wilayat of Mazyuna for familiarization.

It is worth noting that holding the festival is part of the efforts of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to develop the tourism sector in the Dhofar Governorate to be a sustainable tourist destination throughout the year, in addition to highlighting the winter tourism potentials in the governorate.
