Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mansour Al Shanfari, Director General of the General Directorate of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, said: Sugarcane is included as a main ingredient in many Omani table dishes and popular uses, and it is also one of the most important components of the Omani sweets industry, and therefore many development, extension and service programs have been implemented.

Early by developing sugarcane cultivation, modernizing its traditional presses, improving marketing methods and caring for those in charge of it (farmers and manufacturers) in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate during the past years, especially projects funded by the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund and the agricultural development and extension allocations.

He added to the Oman News Agency that the total area planted with sugar cane in the states of Al Dakhiliyah Governorate during the current agricultural season amounted to more than 80 acres in light of competition between the feasibility of cultivating other crops for land area, the abundance of water, and the economic feasibility of marketing.

The cultivated areas have doubled during the seasons of implementing programs to promote the crop. Sugar is several times the traditional area, noting that the increase in the area cultivated for the crop is due to developments in traditional sugarcane cultivation in the governorate, linked to the local market’s requirements for the sugar product and its derivatives, thus increasing the traditional area that prevailed in the past and was scattered in the villages and states of the governorate.
