Expats fined OMR 2000, illegal chewing tobacco seized in Oman

The Consumer Protection Department in the South Sharqiyah Governorate in Sur managed to seize quantities of chewing tobacco in the Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali, as part of the efforts made by the Consumer Protection Authority to combat the spread of unauthorized goods to be traded.

The judicial police officers, during their field visits to shops and markets, that one of the workers threw bags into the trash while they were searching the shop, which raised their doubts about the identity of those bags, which prompted them to search the entire shop, which resulted in finding a bag containing 180 pills of smokeless chewing tobacco, and following up on the inspection, 96 small bags of chewing tobacco and ten bags of the “Pan” type were seized in a nearby store.

 Accordingly, the seized quantities were confiscated in preparation for their destruction after completing the legal procedures and issuing a seizure report on the incident. The expatriate workers confessed to the crime attributed to them, and thus they had violated Resolution No. (256/2015) and its amendments regarding the ban on the circulation of chewed (non-smoking) tobacco. Imposing an administrative fine of one thousand Omani riyals for each violator with a total of 2,000 Omani riyals, and all seized quantities of chewing (non-smoking) tobacco will be destroyed in accordance with the regulations and procedures in force in the Consumer Protection Authority.
