First successful Tumor operation using CyberKnifeS7 system in Oman

Muscat: The radiology treatment team of Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre carried out the first successful operation using CyberKnifeS7 apparatus, which is a high accuracy system in diagnosing tumors of the brain and the lung. The operation took only five sessions.

Dr. Zahid Abdullah Al Mantheri, Head of the Radiology Treatment Department, said that the new system is fitted with a motion syncing technology that allows the tracking of tumor locations with high efficiency, while the patient is breathing. The robot moves along the tumor, giving full access to radiological therapy that preserves a maximum number of sound tissues surrounding the tumor without compromising the basic functions of the organ suffering cancer.

Three brain tumor treatment operations have been operated since the introduction of the new apparatus, said Dr. Zahid, noting that the system will provide for the treatment of a large number of cancer cases.

Meanwhile, Dr. Iqbal Al Amri, a radiotherapy physician at Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre, said that some of the workers at the centre were dispatched to the United State for training, while other personnel are attending courses online.

She added that radiological therapy using the new apparatus required high definition which, in turn, requires time. It took the team three month to prepare for the therapy to ensure the success of the operations.
