Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman’s fish production until the end of May 2022 witnessed a decrease of 22.6 percent to 346,391 tons, compared to 447,391 tons in the same period in 2021.
While the total value of fish production increased by 1.9 percent, reaching 186 million and 852 thousand Omani riyals, compared to the same period in 2021, according to data issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information.
Artisanal fishing, which accounts for the majority of the Sultanate of Oman’s production of fish, recorded a decrease of 24.3 percent to reach 324,044 tons until the end of May 2022, compared to 428,041 tons in the same period in 2021.
Al Wusta Governorate topped the list of governorates of the Sultanate of Oman in the amount of fish landed by artisanal fishing, with its production reaching 126,937 tons, recording a 32 percent decrease at the end of May 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.
South Al Sharqiya governorate came in second place with a production quantity of 101,303 tons, recording a decrease of 26.9 percent by the end of May 2022, followed by Dhofar Governorate in third place with a quantity of 32,646 tons, recording a decrease of 18.3 percent.
Fish production through artisanal fishing in the Governorate of Muscat recorded a 21 percent increase at the end of May 2022, with a production quantity of 13,403 tons, compared to 11,081 tons during the same period in 2021.
Statistics showed that the commercial and coastal fishing sectors recorded a growth of 16.7 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively. Small pelagic fish constituted the largest proportion of the total production of the artisanal fishing sector until the end of May 2022, as their quantity amounted to 174,837 tons, a 34 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2021.
