Number of Nurses in GCC Hits 413,200, Up 150,000 in a Decade

Muscat:  The number of nursing staff in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reached 413,200 by the end of 2024, recording an average annual growth rate of 4.6 percent over the past decade, according to data issued by the Gulf Statistical Center.

The data indicated an increase of around 150,000 nurses between 2014 and 2024, reflecting continued expansion in healthcare systems and investment in human resources to meet growing demand for medical services.

Nursing staff account for 30.3 percent of the total health workforce in GCC countries, underscoring their central role in supporting healthcare services and ensuring continuity of care.

According to the statistics, 62.4 percent of nurses work in government health institutions, highlighting the reliance on the public sector in delivering healthcare services.

The proportion of GCC nationals in the nursing workforce reached 30.3 percent in 2024, compared to 29.6 percent in 2023, reflecting ongoing efforts to promote national workforce participation in the sector.

Female nurses constitute 73.6 percent of the total nursing workforce in the GCC, in line with global trends in the profession.

In terms of workforce density, GCC countries recorded an average of 67.5 nurses per 10,000 people in 2024, exceeding the global average of 37.7 nurses per 10,000.

Globally, the World Health Organization reported that the number of nurses reached approximately 29.8 million in 2023, with women accounting for about 67 percent of the nursing and midwifery workforce.
