Muscat:The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy thundershowers accompanied by strong downdraft winds over several governorates of the Sultanate of Oman starting Thursday.
According to the advisory, Musandam Governorate is expected to experience heavy thunderstorms on Thursday, with anticipated rainfall amounts ranging between 20 and 60 millimeters, which may occasionally lead to flash floods and overflowing wadis, in addition to strong downdraft winds.
The CAA indicated that there is also a chance of isolated rain with thundershowers affecting the governorates of Al Buraimi, A’Dhahirah, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, A’Dakhiliyah and Muscat from Thursday evening until Friday evening, with rainfall amounts expected to range between 10 and 40 millimeters, potentially causing flash floods, wadis and active downdraft winds.
In addition, the Authority noted a chance of isolated thundershowers over North A’Sharqiyah, South A’Sharqiyah and parts of Al Wusta Governorate, which may also lead to flash floods and overflowing wadis.
The CAA warned that downdraft winds may reach speeds of 15 to 35 knots (28–64 km/h), accompanied by a reduction in horizontal visibility during thundershowers. It also cautioned that sea conditions may become rough, with wave heights ranging between 2.0 and 3.5 meters along the Musandam Governorate and Oman Sea coasts.
The Civil Aviation Authority urged all citizens and residents to exercise caution, avoid crossing wadis, stay away from low-lying areas, and refrain from sailing during the alert period.
