Historical symposium on marine heritage in Sohar

Sohar: The Office of the Governor of North Al Batinah Region organized today, in the hall of Sultan Qaboos Mosque in the Wilayat of Sohar, the historical symposium “The Maritime Heritage of North Al Batinah Governorate”.

The activities of the symposium were sponsored by His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Busaidi, Governor of Sohar, with the participation and attendance of a number of specialists and those interested in maritime history in the Sultanate of Oman.

The symposium dealt with a number of historical axes through the presented working papers. Saeed bin Abdullah Al Farsi, a researcher in intangible cultural heritage, presented a working paper entitled “The Maritime Folklore of North Al Batinah Governorate”, in which he talked about the concept of folklore, an overview of the elements of folklore, and its applications. Elements of the folklore on the coastal environment of North Al Batinah.

While the second working paper came from the symposium on shipbuilders in North Al Batinah, it was presented by Ahmed bin Khalfan Al Shibli, a researcher in Omani history. North Al Batinah, with a display of marine vessels that still exist today.

The symposium also included a discussion session on the maritime history of North Al Batinah Governorate, moderated by Dr. Huda Al Zadjali, during which a number of questions and inquiries were answered about cruises and ships made in the states of North Al Batinah.

In conclusion, the symposium came out with a number of recommendations, including: focusing on preserving maritime history and encouraging researchers in this field, and establishing a maritime museum that documents the ancient history of ships and their voyages and the stories told about this history.
