Inflation rate in Oman hits 1.89% in January 2023

Muscat: The inflation rate of the Consumers Price Index (CPI) in the Sultanate of Oman stood at 1.89% during January 2023, according to the latest data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The data indicated a rise in the prices of main groups in January 2023 compared to the corresponding period in 2022, such as food and non-alcoholic beverages by 4.78%, restaurants and hotels by 3.91%, furniture, household equipment and routine household maintenance by 3.42%, health by 2.73%, miscellaneous goods and services by 2.04%, recreation and culture by 1.96%, clothing and footwear by 1.00%, transport by 0.77%, education by 0.05%, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 0.03%. Meanwhile, inflation declined in the group of communications by 0.15%, and stabilized in the tobacco group.

Prices also went up for oils and fats by 19.60%, milk, cheese and eggs by 7.53%, meats by 5.70%, bread and cereals by 5.50%, non-alcoholic beverages by 5.18%, other foodstuff by 3.45%, fruits by 3.28%, sugar, jam, honey and sweets by 2.61%, fish and seafood by 2.14%.

Prices dropped in the group of vegetables by 0.12%.

As far as governorates are concerned, Al Buraimi recorded the highest inflation rate by (2.91%), followed by Al Dakhiliyah (2.13%), Al Dhahirah (2.11%), North Al Batinah (1.94%) and Muscat (1.89%).

The lowest inflations rate was recorded in the Governorate of Dhofar, as well as the Governorates of North and South Al Sharqiyah by 1.83% and 1.36% respectively.
