Investment in Oman’s Shrimp Farming Projects Reaches Over OMR 134mln in 2023

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources said that a total of six shrimp farming projects operated in different governorates of Oman by the end of 2023, and that the value of those projects stood at OMR 134,087,000.

Due to its vast, salty lands and its proximity to the sea, South A’Sharqiyah Governorate took the lead in hosting the largest number of shrimp farming projects, according to statistics released by the Ministry.

Dr. Issa Mohammed Al Farsi, Director of the Fish Farming Development Department at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, said that, of all fish farming projects, the shrimp farms generated new sources of income for citizens.

Al Farsi pointed out that the shrimp farms benefit citizens in many ways. He explained that ordinary citizens, those who operate in transportation and owners of small and medium enterprises now purchase the produce directly from shrimp farms and sell it in local markets or export it to neighbouring countries.

Al Farsi added that the Ministry is planning to augment the system of biosecurity in fish farms and open up new markets for Omani exports (of fish farming products). The plan seeks to consolidate the added value of national fish farming products and enhance the local market with different, high-quality products, he added. – ONA
