Koofan Heritage House, Generations Continuity Museum opens in Dhofar

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism opened the Generations Continuity Museum and “Koofan Heritage House” under the auspices of Tarik Khalid al Hinai, wali of Taqah in Dhofar on Tuesday.

Khalid bin Abdullah al Abri, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, said, “This is the first licensed private museum (Generations Continuity Museum) and the first heritage hostel in Dhofar. The museum will help highlight cultural heritage and promote historical tourism in the governorate. The ministry grants licences to individuals wishing to invest in such activities after ensuring they follow the special requirements for the establishment of new tourist facilitates.”

Abri informed that the new tourist hostel is called ‘Koofan Heritage House’. “The house was converted into a heritage hostel following several renovations. Guests will be able to learn about the traditional way of life and history, and explore Omani architecture in the old neighbourhood in the wilayat of Taqah.”

Faisal Salim Koofan, supervisor of Koofan Heritage House, informed that it has rooms with traditional décor and high ceilings made of local wood, a garden, a terrace and free parking. “It also has a sharing kitchen, room service and a currency exchange for guests.”

The house is close to 150 years old and considered one of the most beautiful traditional houses in the wilayat.

Koofan informed that the property is a fine example of an old Dhofari house and has clothes, furniture and kitchen ware that “document the life of the people of the wilayat of Taqah in the old days”.

The three-floor house was a family residence and a shelter for many others who sought refuge in it during crises and difficult climatic conditions and also had shops.

The house has numerous antiquities, including pottery, copper and metal ware, tools for dairy production, kitchen utensils, handicrafts, jewellery and perfume.
