

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth & Water Resources confirmed that the local watermelon product is available in the markets in various governorates at reasonable prices.
The ministry said that it is following the supply of watermelon at the central market for vegetables and fruits and the extent of its availability on daily basis, and its delivery in the market is about 300 tons per day, and its wholesale price ranges between 120 to 160 baisas per kilo, and that most of the product comes from the Najd region in the Dhofar Governorate, and then from the rest of the governorates.
The Ministry indicated that random samples of watermelons and various products will continue to be taken and analyzed in accredited laboratories to verify that they are free of pesticide residues exceeding the internationally permitted limits. For its part, the Ministry encourages farmers, guides them and recommends them to use modern farming techniques, because of their importance and expand the cultivation areas, and thus achieving Quality and increase in production.
It is worth noting that the area of land cultivated by the watermelon crop in the Sultanate, according to the Ministry’s statistics for the year 2019, amounted to (4,162) feddans, with total production reaching (56,616) tons compared to the year 2018, which amounted to (5,6047) tons, with an area estimated at (4,120) feddans.
The watermelon crop in the Sultanate is one of the main summer agricultural crops that bear good fruit and are of high quality and productivity, due to the fertility of the soil and the purity of the water, as fresh water is a key factor in the quality of the watermelon crop. – ONA
