Mangrove planting campaign begins in South Al Sharqiyah

The Environment Authority has implemented a campaign to plant mangrove seedlings in the Wilayat of Masirah, South Al Sharqiyah Governorate.

The Environment Department in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, represented by the Environmental Center in the Wilayat of Masirah, organised a mangrove plantation campaign, the second phase, in Khor Jarn, coinciding with the celebration of the World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2 of each year.

Majid bin Mahfouz Al Araimi, Head of the Environmental Center in the Wilayat of Masirah, said: “This campaign coincides with the global event and with the initiative to plant 10 million wild trees, which is being implemented by the Environment Authority in the Sultanate of Oman. It will be in stages for a number of khors in the wilayat .”

Al Araimi added that this campaign aims to intensify the percentage of vegetation in general and mangroves as the most prominent plant species on coastal wetlands, which contribute to enhancing food security for coastal communities, mitigate the negative effects of climate change and protect coastal beaches from erosion and erosion factors.

Mangrove trees are important and rich plants for food for fish, molluscs, crustaceans and birds, which are sources of income for coastal communities.
