Mangrove Planting Campaign in Masirah

The Environment Department in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, represented by the Environment Center in the Wilayat of Masirah, organized a campaign to plant mangroves in Khoury Al Har and Jarn, with the participation of the center’s employees and civil and voluntary teams in the state.

The campaign included planting 3,000 mangroves, including 2,900 in Khor Al-Har, which is considered a continuation of the mangrove cultivation project, which was launched in March 2007, through which the creek was planted in phases, and 100 mangroves were planted in Khor Jarn, which is a new beginning for the cultivation of Khor New in line with the national initiative to plant 10 million trees and to provide a suitable environment for their growth in the new creek.

During the campaign, Majid bin Mahfouz Al-Araimi, Head of the Environment Center in the Wilayat of Masirah, confirmed that the cultivation campaigns confirm the strategy of the efforts made by the Environment Authority to preserve and enhance wildlife in the marine environment, by preparing and diversifying marine environment sites and creating a suitable climate for wildlife.

Khor Al-Har is considered one of the most important sites for cultivating mangroves in the Wilayat of Masirah, where the number of mangroves cultivated reaches more than 100,000 trees, since the beginning of the planting campaigns in 2007.

The lagoons and wetlands are of environmental and economic importance, as the Environment Agency intensifies campaigns to plant and preserve mangroves in these sites, due to their importance to the marine environment, and the good environment they provide for the multiplication and diversity of marine organisms.

Natural mangroves are considered one of the most important natural resources that characterize the Omani marine environment, as they are important in preserving the environmental balance, due to their ability to withstand weather conditions and water salinity in areas close to the sea and natural lagoons. They are also incubating areas for many types of fish of commercial value. And other marine organisms and many other micro-fungal organisms, as mangroves protect beaches from the effects of waves and beach erosion.
