Masirah Winter Festival Strengthens National Identity, Boosts Domestic Tourism, and Supports Local Economy
Masirah: The Wilayat of Masirah in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate is witnessing vibrant activities through the Masirah Winter Festival 2026, held under the slogan “Masirah Brings Us Together”. The festival brings together popular maritime arts, sports activities, entertainment shows, productive families, traditional crafts, popular foods, and a variety of competitions.
The winter nights of Masirah have come alive with artistic and cultural performances that reflect an integrated developmental and cultural model, combining the strengthening of national identity, the revitalization of domestic tourism, and the support of the local economy.
Masirah is distinguished by its rich intangible cultural heritage, particularly in traditional crafts and age-old handicrafts. Most notable among these are the spinning and weaving industries and the traditional kohl-making craft, which form an integral part of daily life in the wilayat. These crafts play a significant role in preserving cultural heritage, documenting traditional practices, and encouraging Omani creative skills.
The spinning and weaving craft, which is still practiced today, relies on animal wool and hides. The process of producing handmade textiles takes approximately 14 days, beginning with shearing wool from goats and sheep, followed by washing and drying the wool, then twisting and spinning it. Some threads are dyed in various colors and used to decorate and shape textiles with distinctive and vibrant designs.
The festival’s organizing committee allocated dedicated spaces for productive families and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), highlighting the vital role played by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The Authority continues to support entrepreneurs by enabling their projects, marketing their products, and creating sustainable economic opportunities that contribute to enhancing professional stability and increasing local income.
The festival recorded the participation of 113 exhibitors, including 53 craftsmen and craftswomen, in addition to 20 home-based business license holders, reflecting strong community engagement and interaction. This turnout confirms the festival’s positive impact in encouraging business owners to participate in national events and stimulating local commercial activity.
The Masirah Winter Festival represents a qualitative addition to seasonal events in the Sultanate of Oman, showcasing the wilayat’s tourism and economic potential. It also strengthens Masirah’s position as a promising winter tourism destination by attracting visitors of all age groups and offering an integrated experience that meets the aspirations of families and tourists in an appealing winter atmosphere.
