Muscat: The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation today launched a strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of domestic animals in the Sultanate of Oman.
Undertaken by Oman Animal and Plant Genetic Resources Centre (Mawarid)—affiliated to the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, the strategy constitutes a roadmap for national action to ensure optimum and sustainable use of domesticated animals’ genetic resources.
Dr. Rahma Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, said that the strategy seeks to achieve food security and sustainable development based on sound planning.
The minister added that the strategy is primarily devised to halt the loss of diversity of domesticated animals’ genetic resources and enhance their contribution to national, regional and global development of food security.
It is worth noting that the launch of the strategy coincides with the release of a book bearing the title. The book serves as a durable charter to enable Oman to better manage animal genetic resources. – ONA
