Oman Recognised by UNESCO as Model Arab Country in Greening Education
Muscat: The Ministry of Education today honored the Green Schools for the academic year 2024/2025 in a ceremony held under the patronage of Majid Said Al Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Administrative and Financial Affairs.
During the event, 50 schools from various governorates were recognized for their contributions to advancing the project’s objectives through the implementation of programs and activities that promote the concepts of Greening Education in alignment with Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Target 7 related to Education for Sustainable Development.
On behalf of UNESCO, Julia Hayes, Head of the Education for Sustainable Development Section, delivered a speech in which she commended the Sultanate of Oman’s leading role in implementing the Greening Education Partnership initiative stemming from the Transforming Education Summit 2022. She affirmed that Oman is considered one of the pioneering countries in this field.
The ceremony also witnessed the signing of cooperation programmes with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Sohar Aluminum, Shell Oman, and the Omani Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah).
These programmes aim to support the Ministry’s efforts to expand the Greening Education initiative and enhance environmental activities in schools, thereby embedding sustainability practices and promoting environmental awareness among students. The agreements reflect effective public-private partnerships in service of both community and environmental goals.
The Ministry of Education has successfully aligned the National Green Schools Standard with the UNESCO Green Schools Quality Standard, enabling 23 schools from various governorates to join the Global Green Schools Network.
UNESCO has selected the Sultanate of Oman as one of the model Arab countries in the field of Greening Education, as part of efforts to achieve the goal of transforming 50% of schools into Green Schools by 2030.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Abdullah Khamis Ambusaidi, Undersecretary for Education and Head of the National Team for the Greening Education Partnership Initiative, along with a number of Directors General from the Ministry of Education.
