More than 395000 tons of fish landed by artisanal fishing in Oman

Muscat: The total quantities of fish landed by artisanal fishing in the Sultanate of Oman by the end of July 2023 amounted to about 395,888 tons, with a value amounting to 218,316 thousand Omani riyals, an increase of 5.3 percent compared to the same period in 2022, which amounted to 375,992 tons.

Preliminary statistics issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information indicated that the amount landed by commercial fishing at the end of last July amounted to 20,590 tons, while the amount landed by coastal fishing reached 3,88 tons.

The highest quantity of fish landed by artisanal fishing came in the Al Wusta Governorate, where the quantity reached 150,648 tons, followed by the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate with 117,387 tons, then the Dhofar Governorate with 44,287 tons, and North and South Al Batinah with 42,678 tons. The amount of fish landed by artisanal fishing in Musandam Governorate reached 23,892 tons, and 16,996 tons in Muscat Governorate.

The largest quantity of fish landed by artisanal fishing came from small pelagic fish, as their quantity reached about 230,448 tons at the end of last July, compared to 193,982 tons at the end of July 2022, an increase of 18.8 percent. The quantity of large pelagic fish landed by artisanal fishing decreased by 7.1 percent, reaching 91,829 tons at the end of last July, compared to 98,863 tons at the end of July 2022. The amount of demersal fish caught by artisanal fishing amounted to 62,883 tons, a decrease of 12 percent compared to the same period in 2022, which amounted to 71,427 tons.

As for the quantities of sharks landed by artisanal fishing, it increased by 9.6 percent, to reach 3,708 tons at the end of last July, compared to 3,384 tons at the end of July 2022. With regard to crustaceans and molluscs caught by artisanal fishing until the end of last July; 4,757 tons were downloaded, compared to 5,146 tons by the end of July 2022, and the amount of artisanal fishing from other fish reached 2,263 tons.
