Municipal Councils Symposium Concludes with number of recommendations

Muscat: The Municipal Councils Symposium, which concluded today, came out with a number of recommendations aimed at upgrading performance in a manner that responds to the needs of the forthcoming stage of domestic development.

The symposium recommended the implementation of provisions of the Municipal Councils Law and the integration of efforts between municipal councils, government departments and the private sector establishments with the prime aim of realizing the vision of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to empower the councils so that they could better carry out their developmental and social roles within their respective governorates.

The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Sayyid Hamoud Faisal Al Busaidi, Minister of the Interior.

The symposium underscored the significance of municipal councils’ awareness about updates brought about by Oman Vision 2040. It focused on linking the councils’ legally defined functions with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. In this context, special emphasis was laid on devising annual plans to secure sustained high performance.

The symposium called for espousing clear-cut criteria to measure the performance of municipal councils, bearing in mind demographic and geographical differences between the governorates.

The symposium recommended a review of the formation of municipal affairs committees in the wilayats to offer better opportunities to study developmental needs.

A session titled “Media Aspects of Municipal Councils” was held on the closing day of the symposium. In addition, a discussion panel was held on means of integrating the roles of municipal councils’ members with the roles of governors.

The two-day event saw the launch of an electronic app called “Tanmia”, which was developed by the Ministry of Interior. The app serves as a digital interface and a meeting space for municipal councils and members of the public.

The symposium was attended by Royal family members, ministers and other senior government officials and governors. – ONA
