Muscat Fighting Championships Brings WBC to Oman

Muscat Fighting Championships: Biggest Boxing Event in the Sultanate

Muscat Fighting Championships (MFC) opens doors to the boxing arena here in Oman on the 10th of March with a fight card sanctioned by the world-renowned international boxing federation, the World Boxing Council (WBC).

MFC is a non-profit private martial arts sporting league established to serve as a vehicle to promote local Omani athletes and act as a catalyst to launch them to the international arena. With the support of its international sanctioning bodies and affiliations such as the World Boxing Council (WBC), MFC aims to uncover young, talented MMA enthusiasts and set the stage to launch them into the world of international competitions.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the fastest growing sport today. Amongst other disciplines, it comprises of judo, boxing, taekwondo, kickboxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu. Since 2010, martial arts have attracted over 250,000 students across Oman with over 10 mainstream private clubs having more than 25 actively competing athletes at present, all of which will be competing in the MFC.

In-line with Oman Vision 2040, MFC aims to bridge the gap between the private and public sector whereby promoting sports tourism in Oman which will contribute to the socio-economic of the Sultanate particularly in creating new employment opportunities for the Omani youth. Furthermore, through promotion of martial arts, MFC aims to promote healthier lifestyles, reduce rates of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes, and help the youth channel their energy in a positive way, as well as reducing the overall bill of health of the country.

President of MFC, Baqar Haider, to whom the WBC Amateur representation was awarded commented “Having the WBC Amateur sanction this event is an excellent opportunity for the local fight scene. The WBC has champions such as Mohammed Ali, Mike Tyson, and Prince Naseem Hameed so having this opportunity here in Oman is exceptional. There is a large pool of talent here that has not had the opportunity to be exploited yet”. According to Baqar, the importance of having the right sanctioning body cannot be understated. Their role is to ensure the strict adherence to global best practices on safety rules, anti-doping measures and fair play.

In anticipation of the event, the MFC committee gathered at the Grand Hyatt to discuss the future of MMA in Oman.

All coaches were elated to have the event sanctioned by the WBC. Coach Abdullah, Jiu-Jitsu champion and founder of Tmrn Gym said “Being a part of MFC makes us official players in the big arena of boxing and gives us a plan to follow. This is an important step as it’s not for an individual or a club, but for our country Oman”. Coach Risto agreed, “It puts Oman on the map and is a launchpad for our athletes showcase their talent to the world.”

Coach Ali Kerdi of Fitbox and Coach Najeeb of Rolling Gym, said “These championships were long awaited, and they seem like a breath of fresh air with the fighters having something to look forward to. The pandemic made people realise how important health- mental and physical is after being cooped up for months in their homes.”
