Muscat Municipality conducts intensive monitoring campaigns for food safety and public health during holy month of Ramadan

In preparation for Ramadan Increasing Supervision of food Establishments and Laboratory Testing of Products in Muscat Governorate

Muscat: Muscat Municipality’s preparations for the blessed month of Ramadan, ensuring the safety of the most commonly consumpted foods during Ramadan, and ensuring that food establishments and dealing customers to health requirements. The work team in the Food and Laboratories Department of the General Directorate of Health Affairs reported that continuous campaigns will be organized throughout Ramadan. It aims to ensure the extent to which food establishments’ fulfillment of the requirements for transporting, storing, preparing and displaying products and foodstuffs.

The inspection campaigns will include two campaigns. The first campaign is implemented before Ramadan on food warehouses, focusing on food products that are frequently consumpted during Ramadan to ensure accordance to food safety standards. The second campaign is a continuous periodic campaign that begins at the beginning of Ramadan on central markets, multi-activity stores, stores selling vegetables, fruits, and dates, stores selling coffee and nuts, activities selling meat and poultry, and stores selling various kinds of sweets. This is to ensure compliance with health requirements during the storage, display and sale of consumpted foodstuffs that.consumer shopping increases during Ramadan. It aims to ensure the fresh food products’ safety in markets, which are usually perishable and tainted if they are not displayed, stored and consumpted in accordance with food safety requirements.

With reference to preserve the consumers’ public health and ensure the prepared foods’ safety, which are increasingly consumed in Iftar meals. All necessary preparations have been accomplished by numerous visits and inspections of establishments that prepare these meals by specialized inspection teams. Samples will be taken for examination in the municipality laboratory through various physical, microbiological and chemical tests to ensure that they are free of any contaminants or materials that violate the approved specifications and legislations.

During this period, there is much consumption of fried foods during Ramadan. The quality of used oils in foods’ frying will be monitored. Additionally, confirming the places where food is stored and prepared, and cooking methods, preparing, preserving and transporting it. As well as, confirming that employees commit to offer it in the correct manner by paying attention to personal hygiene, gloves and a head covering wearing and health certificates’ offer that are issued by their competent authority. Moreover, to ensure that foods are cooked to appropriate temperatures. As well as, commitment to the temperatures at food preservation after preparation.

Muscat Municipality confirms its concern for the consumers’ safety and health and ensuring the quality and safety of food and products which are offered in local markets in Muscat Governorate. It calls on community members to report any notice regarding foods’ quality and safety or products that are offered in markets and shops or food in restaurants.
