Florida: The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has postponed the historic Artemis II mission—the first crewed lunar flight in more than half a century—due to forecasted near-freezing temperatures at Kennedy Space Center.
The launch, which will send four astronauts on a journey around the Moon and back, has been rescheduled for no earlier than 8 February 2026, representing a two-day delay from the original launch date. The decision followed the cancellation of a critical fueling test for the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, standing 98 meters tall, which had been planned for this weekend.
NASA explained that the postponement has narrowed the available launch window to three potential days in early February, after which the opportunity would shift to March. The agency noted that any further delays would result in a corresponding day-for-day adjustment to the launch schedule. In response to cold-weather risks, NASA is implementing system adaptations, including adjustments to rocket purging operations and the use of heaters for the Orion crew capsule.
The delay adds complexity to NASA’s closely coordinated launch schedule, as the Artemis II mission must now be balanced with the planned launch of a new crew to the International Space Station (ISS). That mission was brought forward following the early medical return of the current ISS crew.
NASA officials confirmed that the Artemis II lunar mission will be given priority if it can launch by 11 February, the final available date this month. Should the launch proceed within that window, the subsequent ISS crew rotation would be postponed until the Artemis astronauts return to Earth later in February.
The Artemis II mission represents a major milestone in human space exploration, marking humanity’s return to deep-space crewed missions since Apollo 17 in 1972. A full launch dress rehearsal for the SLS rocket is now scheduled for Monday, pending favourable weather conditions.
