Muscat: The National Biotechnology Committee today held its 6th meeting under the chairmanship of Dr. Saif Abdullah Al Haddabi, Research and Innovation Undersecretary at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.
Held at the Innovation Park Muscat, the meeting approved a preparatory portfolio for the national workshop on drafting the National Biotechnology Strategy and related policies.
The committee members were briefed about proposed guidelines for policies regulating the uses of biotechnology in Oman.
Earlier, the National Biotechnology Committee and its supporting technical team re-studied the current legislation, regulations and principles governing the uses of biotechnology, notably in terms of protection of genetic resources. They also looked into an analysis of the current status of government regulations, specific needs and challenges in this aspect.
The analysis will contribute to defining clear and systematic goals for the development and regulation of the biotechnology sector in Oman. The committee will take steps to achieve those goals in the best possible manner. The process begins with defining priorities in the field of biotechnology and proceeds to orienting investments, research and development efforts towards the accomplishment of biotechnology’s prime objective of improving public health and enhancing economic and social development. The committee will work in cooperation with government departments specialized in biotechnology. – ONA
