Muscat: The Nature Reserves Committee, during its first meeting of 2026, discussed several files related to the development and declaration of new natural reserves in the Sultanate of Oman as part of efforts to enhance biodiversity protection and environmental sustainability.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
The meeting reviewed the committee’s formation and functions, in addition to following up on the implementation status of previously proposed reserves and discussing new projects and environmentally significant sites. The discussions reflected the Authority’s approach towards expanding the network of natural reserves based on scientific and sustainable standards.
The meeting also reviewed the implementation status of several proposed reserves. Relevant government entities highlighted advanced levels of coordination and approval regarding a number of related files within a framework that balances human use and environmental conservation.
The committee emphasized the importance of full compliance with environmental requirements and ensuring that projects do not conflict with nature reserves, military uses or petroleum concession areas.
In addition, the committee discussed several new proposals concerning environmentally valuable sites, reflecting the Environment Authority’s efforts to support integrated management of nature reserves and preserve natural resources and biodiversity in line with sustainability goals and Oman Vision objectives in the field of environmental protection.
