Nearly RO 400,000 raised for Turkey, Syria earthquake victims

Muscat: The plight of earthquake affected people in Türkiye & Syria, a donation drive was launched in the Sultanate of Oman to collect funds for them. So far, over RO 370,000 have been collected as part of the campaign to help the quake victims.

According to the online donation portal, the total money received online reached RO154,129 between February 6 and 19, 2023, while the ‘Pain and hope to help those affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkey’ campaign launched by Dar Al Atta’a collected RO76,722 and the Oman Charitable Organisation (OCO) got RO77,407.

The OCO also said that it has received RO220,000 from the Omani National Engineering and Investment Company (ONEIC) for relief in Syria and Türkiye with total donations reaching RO373,629.

The OCO has called for donations for earthquake victims in the embodiment of the royal orders and it also operated relief flights to the affected areas in Syria and Türkiye in cooperation with the Royal Omani Air Force.

The OCO announced that contributions can be made through the ONEIC automatic payment machines or via text messages for Omantel users (number 90022) and Ooredoo users (number 90909), where a donation of one Omani rial is made for each message.

The authority also announced account numbers for donations through Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman and Bank Dhofar.

Death toll in Türkiye-Syria quake has surpassed 46,000. The World Health Organization says that the number of victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria does not reflect the true scale of the disaster, noting that the number of affected people may reach 23 million.
