Number of marriages increased by 2.1% in Oman during 2020

Muscat: Marriage documents in the Sultanate of Oman increased by 2.1 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, as 18,621 marriage documents were registered, according to the “Marriage and Divorce 2021” bulletin issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information.

The Governorate of North Al Batinah came the highest among the governorates in registering marriage documents for the year 2020, with a number of 3,938, an increase of 11% compared to 2019, followed by the Governorate of Muscat with a number of 3,354, a rise of 1.9 percent from 2019, and marriage documents decreased in Musandam Governorate in 2020 increased by 31.1% compared to 2019 to register 104 documents, making it the lowest governorate in registering marriage documents for the year 2020.

The data also showed a decrease in the number of Omani men married to expatriates in 2020 by 180 cases, and the number of Omanis married to Gulf women also decreased by 49 compared to 2019. The number of Omani women getting married to a Gulf citizen decreased by 65, while the number of Omani women marrying expatriates dropped by 53 cases during 2020.

On the other hand, the total number of divorce certificates registered in the Sultanate of Oman in 2020 was 3,426 divorce cases, a decrease of 8.1 percent compared to 2019, and at a rate of 9.4 divorce cases per day, as the number of divorce cases decreased in 2020 between Omani couples by 192 cases. The number of divorces between Omanis and GCC citizens dropped by 17.

Muscat governorate has the highest number of divorce cases between governorates, with 796 cases, followed by North Al Batinah governorate with 672 cases, while Musandam governorate has the lowest number of divorce cases, with 18 cases.
