Oman ranked 41st globally in UN E-Government Survey 2024

New York: The Sultanate of Oman has advanced nine places in the global ranking of the e-Government Index, ranking 41st internationally out of 193 countries, in the United Nations E-Government Survey for 2024, compared to 50th in 2022, and ranked fifth in the Middle East and North Africa.

The survey is issued by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the E-Government Development Index consists of three sub-indices, including the e-services index, the telecommunications infrastructure readiness index, and the human capital index, in addition to an independent index concerned with e-participation. In the 2024 E-Services Index, the Sultanate achieved the 48th international rank compared to the 58th rank in 2022.

This index is calculated through a survey conducted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to evaluate the official portal for e-government services, and government websites in the sectors of education, health, social development, finance, employment, environment, and e-participation and open data initiatives and projects.

The Sultanate of Oman advanced 26 places in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Index, ranking 22nd globally, after being ranked 48th.

This progress comes as a result of government support for the telecommunications and information technology sector. This index measures the readiness of the communications infrastructure through 4 sub-indicators: broadband Internet penetration rate per 100 people, percentage of individuals using the Internet, mobile phone subscriptions per 100 people, and fixed Internet subscriptions per 100 people.

The results of the United Nations study also confirmed the remarkable progress made in the human capital index at the international level, which in turn reflects the progress of education levels in the Sultanate of Oman, as it advanced 14 places to rank 55th internationally compared to rank 69th in 2022; noting that the evaluation in this index is through four indicators: the rate of writing and reading among adults, the gross enrollment rate in primary and secondary stages, the expected years of study, and the average years of study.

It is worth noting that the United Nations E-Government Survey is issued every two years by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and is an important indicator for measuring the progress made by countries in the field of electronic services and the quality of service.
