Oman among the best Arab countries to combat illegal fishing

Muscat: The Global Initiative to Combat Transnational Organized Crime and Poseidon Water Resources Management Company ranked the Sultanate of Oman among the best Arab countries in combating overfishing, according to the Illegal Fishing Index in the world for 2021 issued in cooperation between the two sides.

The Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar came as the best Arab countries in combating overfishing, which deprives artisanal fishermen of fish, severely reduces income and food, and destroys marine resources needed to revive fisheries wealth.

China ranked as the worst country in combating illegal fishing, followed by Russia, South Korea, Somalia and Yemen, while Denmark was ranked as the best country in combating illegal fishing, followed by Romania and Belgium.

The IUU Fishing Index provides a measure of the degree to which countries are exposed to illegal, unreported, unregulated and effectively combated illegal fishing.
