Oman announce shutdown of 3G services from 2024

Muscat: Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority  (TRA) announce shutdown of 3G services beginning from 3rd quarter of year 2024.

With the aim of improving the quality of telecommunications services, and streamlining investments and resources in emerging and latest technologies the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority announces the gradual shutdown of 36 mobile services beginning from the month of July 2024 with least populated ares

Timeline of shutting down 3G services

2021 – Start discussions with sectors that have highest 3G technology usage:

» Banking sector

» Oil & gas sector

» Public services sector

2022 – Type approve communication devices that support latest technologies

» Stop import and type-approval of communication devices that rely solely on 3G networks

» Mandate import of communication devices that support at least 4G networks

2023 – Mandate provisioning of VoLTE feature in mobile phone devices beginning from 28th February 2023

Not to permit import and entry of mobile phone devices that do not support VoLTE feature in Omani market beginning 1st April 2023
