Sanya: Oman’s national beach volleyball team qualified for the second round of the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, after defeating Japan 2-0 in the third round.
The Omani duo, Mazen bin Sulaiman Al Hashemi and Hood bin Rashid Al Jalbubi, secured the win with set scores of 21-17 and 21-14, delivering a strong performance to advance in the Championship.
Other third-round matches saw Iran defeat Syria (2-0), Malaysia beat Korea (2-0), Sri Lanka overcome Bhutan (2-0), China defeat Qatar (2-0), and Saudi Arabia beat Macau (2-0). Qatar also recorded a 2-0 win over Iran, while Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Timor, Laos and Thailand achieved victories in their respective matches.
The team is coached by Badr bin Saeed Al Subhi, with administrative support from Abdullah bin Khalfan Al Maawali.
In athletics, Oman’s Salem bin Saleh Al Yaarubi finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 7.27 metres. Vietnam’s Pham Van secured gold with 7.44 metres, followed by China’s Tao Peijie (7.41 metres) and Sri Lanka’s Miranda Sampath (7.37 metres).
In the 60-metre sprint, Rashid bin Huwaishil Al Asmi placed seventh with a time of 6.90 seconds. Thailand’s Ponsun Purbeol won gold (6.62 seconds), followed by China’s Huang Yushao (6.67 seconds) and Liu Yang (6.74 seconds).
Oman’s participation continues tomorrow with the conclusion of athletics events, including the long jump final featuring Alia bint Faiq Al Mughairi, as well as the relay final.
