Oman celebrates the International Stuttering Awareness Day 2022

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman celebrated the International Day of Stuttering, which falls on the 22nd October, organized by the Ministry of Education represented by the General Directorate of Special Education and Continuing Learning, in cooperation with the “I hear me” initiative, and aims to spread awareness among workers in The educational field and all members of society stress the importance of early intervention, diagnosis and treatment of language and speech disorders.

The event was sponsored by Her Excellency Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education.

During the ceremony, a visual presentation was presented about the efforts made by the Ministry of Education in the field of speech and its care for students who have language and speech disorders in the first cycle classes in schools, special education programs and government schools in the various educational directorates in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, including the implementation of the Speech and Speaking Program. Which was started to be applied at Al-Amal School for the Deaf in the 2004/2005 school year, and its application was expanded to include all educational directorates in the governorates during the 2010/2011 school year.

The ceremony also included a visual presentation entitled “Flashes of Stuttering”, in which the concept of stuttering was discussed from a medical perspective, and that it is not a disease, but rather a disorder or stuttering that affects the incontinence and fluency of speech, with an explanation of the symptoms that may appear on the stutterer, and the effects of stuttering. For those who suffer from it, such as: avoiding contact with others, feeling anxious, low self-confidence and social isolation.

The Minister of Education also honored the organizers of the “Listen to Me” initiative, its sponsors and supporters, its active members, and participants from the Media Department at Sultan Qaboos University, the Creative Content Department of the Communications and Media Department at the Ministry of Education, and a number of excellent employees in the Speech and Speaking Program At the Ministry’s General Office.

At the end of the ceremony, a discussion session was held on stuttering, and the attendees’ inquiries were answered.
