Oman Chairs Arab Forum for Sustainable Development

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Economy, today chaired the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2030 for the year 2024, under the slogan “Working for Sustainability and Peace”. Held via video communication, the three-day forum is held at the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The AFSD, which is organized annually by ESCWA, in cooperation with the Arab League and other United Nations agencies operating in the region, brings together representatives of Arab governments and a wide range of relevant bodies and institutions to discuss progress achieved, review national and regional experiences, and explore the latest developments and implementation mechanisms at the national and regional levels.

Dr. Said Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy, delivered a speech in which he said that the Sultanate of Oman was keen to establish a comprehensive scheme to achieve the 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs), with a focus on national priorities and the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

He added that the Sultanate of Oman has given a top priority to revising the social protection scheme, and gathering all related programmes under one umbrella, so that this scheme is more sustainable, effectively targeting the most needy groups, and improving the standards of decent living for all segments and groups of society.

The minister pointed out that the forum will accord an attention to issues of partnership with the private sector this year, as the Arab Forum for Business Companies on Sustainable Development Goals will be held for the first time within the framework of the AFSD.

The minister further said that the forum will explore regional priorities and contributions to the summit on the future scheduled to be held in New York next September, in which government leaders will agree on multilateral solutions for the benefit of present and future generations.

The forum includes the announcement of the winners of the Arab Digital Content Award for 2024, to honor the best Arabic digital content in support of SDGs.
