Ministry Completes Tiwi Breakwater Upgrade to Protect Fishermen and Coastal Infrastructure
Sur: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the rehabilitation project of the breakwaters in the Niabat of Tiwi in the Wilayat of Sur, South Sharqiyah Governorate, as part of efforts to strengthen fisheries infrastructure and enhance marine safety.
Engineer Abdulnoor bin Issa Al Balushi, Director of the Tiwi Breakwater Rehabilitation Project, said that the project reached 100 percent completion at a total cost of approximately RO 2.9 million.
He explained that the project aims to protect the coastline from strong waves and tidal activity, while improving the efficiency of infrastructure related to fishing operations and marine docking facilities.
The rehabilitation works included strengthening the breakwaters and improving maritime navigation channels, contributing to safer movement for fishermen and supporting the sustainability of marine resources.
Al Balushi noted that the project forms part of broader national efforts to develop fisheries infrastructure and upgrade ports and coastal harbors across the Sultanate of Oman.
He added that the project supports coastal communities by providing a safer operational environment for fishermen and facilitating the movement of fishing vessels.
The project is also expected to support fish production, stimulate economic activity in the area, and create additional investment opportunities linked to the fisheries sector, while offering greater protection for boats and marine equipment during varying weather conditions.
Al Balushi highlighted the strategic importance of the project due to Tiwi’s active fishing movement and maritime activity, noting that it will contribute to sustainable economic, social and environmental returns for the local community.
He affirmed that the Ministry continues implementing projects aimed at developing fishery ports and harbors and equipping them with modern services and facilities to improve operational efficiency and maritime safety standards.
Fishing ports and harbors represent a key pillar in supporting Oman’s fisheries sector and strengthening food security by organizing fishing activities and providing safe operational facilities for fishermen.
The Ministry continues to implement projects focused on developing and maintaining fisheries infrastructure in line with sustainable development objectives.
