Oman is third most peaceful country in MENA

Muscat: Oman has been ranked third most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa, according to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2023.

The ranking also placed Oman 48th in the world, recording a jump of (16) sixteen spots this year. 

The global rankings for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are as follows:

21 Qatar, 35 Kuwait, 48 Oman, 62 Jordan, 75 United Arab Emirates, 81 Tunisa, 84 Morocco, 96 Algeria, 108 Bahrain, 119 Saudi Arabia, 121 Egypt, 134 Palestine, 135 Lebanon, 137 Libya, 143 Israel, 147 Iran and Turkey, 154 Iraq, 155 Sudan, 161 Syria, 162 Yemen. 

The 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) was published on Wednesday, constituting a list based on the level of peace in 163 countries across the globe. 

The report shows that the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0,42 per cent in the 2023 GPI. This is the ninth consecutive year that global peacefulness has deteriorated. The average level of peacefulness has only improved twice year-on-year since 2008.

In the past year; 84 countries improved, while 79 countries recorded a deterioration in peacefulness.

GPI report also noted that over the last 15 years, the world has become less peaceful, with the average county score deteriorating by five per cent
