Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched an awareness campaign about the early warning broadcast service via mobile phones, in cooperation with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and telecommunications service providers.
The early warning broadcast service via mobile phones sends warning messages in record time to thousands of devices in any targeted area.
All mobile users have been urged to activate the early warning broadcast service. (demo video below)
The campaign included the implementation of a number of radio and press interviews, in addition to publishing an educational video to inform the community on tips to activate the early warning broadcast service on mobile devices in the Sultanate of Oman.
CAA will test the service in some areas to ensure that the service is activated on subscribers’ devices in the coming days.
It may be noted that sending a warning message to subscribers’ phones in a particular area using mobile communications networks to warn about a specific emergency is in line with international standards.
These customized messages will appear in distinctive tones on the phone automatically.
TRA has also set special specifications to activate the feature in mobile phones in the Sultanate of Oman, based on international standards.
The most prominent of these specifications is that the messages are automatic without the intervention of the subscriber and that the feature supports all generations of devices, including the FG and the feature must also support several languages, including Arabic, English, Hindi, and Urdu, and long warning messages.
All mobile phones in the Sultanate must be able to receive warning messages in all circumstances, including if in silent mode, in addition to the ability to receive several consecutive warning messages.
