Oman launches “Green Mosque” program

Muscat: As part of its support for programs and projects based on targeting alternative energy in the Sultanate, the “Green Mosque” initiative program for renewable energy was launched today at the authority’s building.

In a statement Oman news agency said: “Amanah for Endowment Funds Management Company, in cooperation with the Authority for Public Services Regulatory (APSR), energy companies and Islamic financial institutions, launches the “Green Mosque” program specialized in the field of renewable energy. The programme will be applied to 100 mosques through 3 packages over a period of 3 years, with an investment of 5 million Omani riyals.

His Excellency Dr. Mansour bin Talib Al Hinai, Chairman of (APSR) said: The “Green Mosque” program will contribute to supporting the Sultanate’s plans towards promoting reliance on renewable energy and enhancing community awareness of the possibility of switching to renewable energy as a practical and economically viable option.

Engineer Yousef bin Ali Al Harthy, CEO of Amanah said: The project represents the first investments of “Amanah” based on the approach of partnership and cooperation with the private sector to serve the endowment system and its investments that seek to participate in comprehensive development programs in the Sultanate.

The project will support 100 mosques in the first year to switch to solar energy and provide their alternative energy needs. The program will provide investment solutions with the aim of encouraging mosques to adopt the use of solar energy by installing panels on roofs, for a fee for installation and operation.
The systems will be owned by the mosque immediately after the end of the investment period agreed upon between the two parties, and this trend is an important step towards achieving the directions of the Oman 2040 vision in the field of using alternative energy.
