Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Agency, joined the rest of the world in marking the International Day for Biological Diversity, which falls on May 22 of each year, and this year comes under the theme (From agreement to action: rebuilding biodiversity).
This year’s celebration comes as a continuation of the efforts made by the United Nations to restore ecosystems, as the slogan highlights the fact that biodiversity is the solution to many of the challenges of sustainable development, as well as spreading the message that biodiversity is the foundation on which we can build better.
On the occasion, the Environment Authority organized a workshop on biodiversity in the Sultanate of Oman, in the authority’s general office, in the presence of a group of students in environmental fields in academic institutions (Sultan Qaboos University, University of Technology and Applied Sciences, and A’Sharqiyah University), and some researchers and academics.
The Environment Agency pays great attention to preserving biodiversity in the Sultanate of Oman, through several field studies aimed at surveying biodiversity in various environmental habitats in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to various plans and projects to preserve biodiversity and preserve endangered species. Among the most prominent projects related to diversity Biological: The National Biodiversity Survey Project, and the Reptile Survey Project in the Sultanate of Oman, which culminated in the launch of the Atlas of Reptiles in the Sultanate of Oman. As well as caring for endangered species and unique Omani species through the establishment of about 26 nature reserves in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
The accession of the Sultanate of Oman to the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1994, and its commitment to its provisions, is among the most important efforts to preserve biodiversity.
