Oman Marks International Human Rights Day

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), today celebrated the international Human Rights Day, which falls on 10 December.

The ceremony was held under the auspices of HH Sayyid Kamil bin Fahd Al Said, Assistant Secretary General of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers, member of Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM) Board of Directors.

Sheikh Abdullah Shuwain Al Hosni, Chairman of OHRC, pledged OHRC’s commitment and keenness to operate in line with international principles and mechanisms based on the Islamic religion and local laws that protect human rights and safeguard people’s interests in Oman.

The ceremony included the felicitation of six humanitarian initiatives that advance human action, in general, and cater to children’s rights in particular. The five of the initiatives were themed as follows: “Dar Al Hanan” (home of affection), “My Childhood Is Safe”, “Hear Me”, “Tell Me about Them” and “I Protect Myself”, while the sixth initiative was undertaken by Masirah Charitable Team.

The promoters of the six initiatives expressed their delight at the felicitation which, they said, constitutes an incentive for them and a great motive for all segments of society.

A visual display was presented on efforts of different government departments, civil society institutions and the OHRC. Also, a play was staged on the problem of negligence of children and wrong practices, like unattended children’s crossing of wadis.

The celebration of the event marks UN general assembly’s advocation, way back in 1948, of the 10th of December as an annual Human Rights Day.
